BESS is coming!

BESS is coming!

BESS is coming!

While utility scale Battery Energy Storage Systems long has been talked about as the key to stabilizing our electricity distribution grids, utility scale deployment has still (by many) been perceived more aspirational than realistic. Well, California (and parts of Nevada) just introduced everyone to the future;

  1. April 16th batteries were the largest source of electricity on the California ISO grid for over two hours

  2. At it’s peak during this period, batteries supplied almost a quarter (24.4%) of all electricity consumed

  3. That means that over 7.6 million people had their electricity needs covered by batteries ALONE!

So what now? Well, this change did not happen by chance. Many companies are working very hard to introduce stand-alone BESS as well as other types of renewable power generation with integrated BESS. As a result, the complexity of renewable energy asset portfolios will continue to increase. Efficiently managing this complexity will be fundamental to ensuring continued momentum of BESS deployment and future availability of reliable and affordable green energy.
